Some Icelandic Christmas Folklore pt. IV – Stúfur AKA Yule Lad No. 3

by Pu on December 13, 2010

Don't be fooled by Stúfur's small size.

Not differently from his brothers, Stúfur (Stubby) has a passion for food. His short legs don’t prevent him to embark in his yearly journey. He makes his appearance on the 14th of December.

Stubby was the third called,
a stunted little man,
who watched for every chance
to whisk off a pan.

And scurrying away with it,
he scraped off the bits
that stuck to the bottom
and brims – his favorites.

Despite his short size, Stúfur is a huge glutton. Scraping scraps of food from pans is a treat for him. Not by chance another nickname of his is Pönnuskefill (Panscraper). Unfortunately for him, nonstick cookware has become very popular in the last years.

I love the bits around the rim of the pan as well! The dogs all look at me with a “what about us?” look as I scrape a teaspoon around the edge of the pan. Can I give myself the name of Pönneskefill? Or would it be unlucky to anger such a troll as Stúfur?

I don’t think he will be mad. I know some other people that should be called in the same way. Some things are irresistible not only to trolls =D
