RIFF 2011 – James Marsh Meets the Audience

by Pu on October 2, 2011

Film director James Marsh was a special guest at Reykjavík International Film Festival 2011 with a retrospective on his creative achievements. The retrospective hosted by RIFF included two of Marsh’s best-known films, Wisconsin Death Trip and Academy Award and BAFTA winner Man on Wire, in addition to the British filmmaker’s latest effort, Project Nim, on ethical issues concerning the experiments on animal language carried out during the 70’s by Herbet S. Terrace and his crew on the chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky. Marsh’s film represent a poignant and unprejudiced overview of the chimp’s life, from his birth and his initial glory days to his death in a shelter for abused animals.

James Marsh RIFF 2011After the screening of Man on Wire and Project Nim, Marsh kindly answered a few questions about the making of his films and inspiration behind them. Moderator of the meeting was Canadian filmmaker Peter Wintonick, a regular presence of the film festival. We have a video recording of the event — we hope you enjoy.

Project Nim was featured at this year’s RIFF as an Icelandic premiere.
